The Open University offers students the flexibility of part-time study so that employment, family commitments and other responsibilities can be managed alongside working towards a certificate, diploma or degree. A system of credit accumulation allows students to take on just as much study as they can manage. It is possible to transfer credits gained from other institutions and indeed, some students complete qualifications partly with the Open University and partly with other Higher Education institutions.
‘Supported Open Learning’ enables students to study from home using the University’s comprehensive packages of study materials, which include written texts and computer-based materials. All students have a course tutor to guide them through their studies. For most courses, the multi-media course materials are supplemented by face to face tutorials which are arranged at local centres placed throughout the region, including University Centre Hastings.
Most Open University courses with tutorials at UCH start either in October or February. Tutorials are held in the evenings on Monday – Thursday, from 7 – 9 p.m and on Saturdays.
Entry requirements: The Open University is just that – open. There are no set entry qualifications needed for most of our courses. We do recommend, however, that you start with a level 1 course, unless you have studied a subject before. ‘Openings’ courses and short ‘level one’ courses present a very useful way in to new learners. Detailed advice and guidance on course choice is available from our experienced Advisers over the phone or at regional open events, providing information and advice and held at locations across the region including the Hastings area. Please refer to the ‘OU Near You’ section of the Open University website (address below) or consult the Open University notice-board at UCH.
Fees: Fees vary considerably from course to course depending on the subject chosen and the level of study. The fee pays for almost everything – from materials and equipment to tuition, assessment and some residential schools. There are financial support facilities available.
