This course is designed to develop the career opportunities and academic credibility of teaching assistants working at Key Stage 1 and 2. The main focus is on your current workplace and there are opportunities to visit other schools. Your activities at work and university-based study are tightly integrated throughout.
The university's School of Education runs this course and has an excellent national reputation - for example we are the first university in the country to achieve an 'outstanding' rating from Ofsted for management and quality assurance across the full range of primary, secondary and post-compulsory (16+) teacher education courses. Our youth work programmes have also been commended by the National Youth Agency.
You may opt for assessment for Higher Level Teaching Assistant status (HLTA) during year 2 of the course.
Each full year of study will include two blocks of three study days, regular sessions one day per week or every two weeks and one Saturday per month. In addition you will undertake work-based activities, reflection and private study (one day per week in total).
The programme will help you: meet the requirements for Higher Level Teaching Assistant status; develop your curriculum knowledge in Mathematics, English, Science and ICT; enhance your communication and presentation skills; plan, deliver and assess learning; understand new initiatives and social and political issues in education.

This course will enable you to work as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant.
After successfully completing the course, progression is possible to the Professional Studies in Learning and Development degree, then to Qualified Teacher Status via the Graduate Teacher Programme or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education - providing you meet government entry requirements for teaching.

Applicants are normally expected to meet the following entrance requirements: - one year as primary teaching assistant or other similar experience - currently working at least 15 hours per week as primary teaching assistant - consent of employing school to release you to attend sessions, provide an in-school learning facilitator and support school-based course activities - computer access with word processing facilities and internet.
