Library induction process

Staff inductions

If you would like a Staff Induction to the Library including detailed information about the Library, how to use the Library catalogue (OPAC) and online resources, plus access and borrowing arrangements and IT services, please ask the Library staff.

For academic staff information about UCH, a tour of the building and academic areas, plus information about admin services, please contact the Centre office on level 3.

Induction for your students

Library inductions for students take place in the Lecture Theatre during the first week of term, and will normally be timetabled into your induction programme by the Centre admin staff. There will be additional "catch-up" sessions in the Library for students who missed their timetabled session. Please contact the Library staff in advance of the start of term if you have any queries.

The induction will include an overview of library services, demonstration of the Library Catalogue (OPAC), and short introduction to Studentcentral and Online Library.

Information Skills

Library Workshops are offered all year round, on request, and in-class sessions may also be arranged. Lunch-time drops-ins are also held during the year.

The workshops focus on how to access online journals and resources for specific subjects and courses. Please contact the Library if you have any queries or would like to arrange workshops for your students.

The following topics are offered:

  • Online resources, databases and journals
  • Literature searching
  • Writing citations and bibliographies using Harvard
  • StudentCentral and The Online Library

Library staff can also offer assistance to staff on a one-to-one basis at any time about any of the above. Please just ask - we are here to help.
