Learning Resource Centre:Please also see the Students section for general information plus links to the Library catalogues. Additional information for University of Brighton staff is available on the UCH Staff Area of Studentcentral - if you don't have access to this please ask in the Centre office or LRC.
The LRC is open to students on courses based at UCH and for teaching staff associated with these courses, regardless of which partner institution (eg University of Brighton, University of Sussex, Canterbury Christ Church University, Hastings College, etc) they belong to.
Others at UCH who are not associated with courses taught here are also welcome to use the LRC for reference purposes. LRC staff will be pleased to help you with resources and enquiries.
Our aim is to have appropriate, relevant, up-to-date resources for all subject areas. Please help us to do this by:
LRC staff work closely with the teaching staff to ensure items on reading lists are available as quickly as possible.
Loan status: In many cases, multiple copies of the recommended textbooks will be added, and are usually designated "7-day loans" to ensure they can be borrowed by more students. Copies can also be designated as a “reference only” or as Desk loan - please discuss with us if you feel this is necessary.
We subscribe to a small number of magazines and journals. We have a very small budget for these and not much space, therefore online journals are preferred to print, and because of licensing issues these should be ordered via your respective instituion/school, not via UCH.
Audio-visual items should be ordered well in advance as they often take a long time to arrive. TV programmes can be recorded onto DVD for library stock, so long as you request them before they go out live. Please ask LRC staff. Please note however that UCH does not have a licence for recording OU programmes.
The key to the collection is the Library Catalogue – or Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) at http://library.uch.ac.uk. You can use the OPAC to search for books we have in the collection, whether they are available and where they are located. You can also use the OPAC to track information about items you have on loan or have reserved, etc. There are four dedicated OPAC access points in the LRC. You can also search other library catalogues on our website.
All students and staff eligible to use the LRC will need to register by completing a form available from the desk.
We we have completed the registration we will issue you with a UCH Access card. This card will be your card for borrowing items and will also control your access to the LRC, academic office(s) and UCH building. Therefore if you lose your card please report it to the LRC as soon as possible. Replacement cards can be issued but please note that a charge of £5 will be made.

You will not be able to borrow items without your UCH Access card. Please ensure you advise your students that they too will require their access card when borrowing items from the LRC.
