Our success in attracting and supporting students from non traditional backgrounds was nationally recognised at the prestigious Times Higher Education Awards 2009 at Grosvenor House Hotel in London on 15 October 2009.
Shortlisted from more than 600 entries and 137 of the UK's higher educational institutions, UCH was nominated for the Widening Participation Initiative of 2009. Although not selected as overall category winner, the nomination recognised UCH's success in attracting and supporting students from under-represented groups to university. Now growing year-on-year, there are approximately 700 students benefitting from university-level education in Hastings.
Margaret Wallis, UCH Centre Director said: "I am thrilled we were part of this top awards ceremony where UCH joined some of the UK's most significant universities in celebrating educational achievement.
"UCH has widening participation at its core. Among our many initiatives to encourage students from non-traditional backgrounds is our work with local schools. Our staff work alongside teachers to raise pupils' self-esteem and awareness of educational opportunities.
As well as inspiring people to enter higher education, this nomination recognises the commitment of the UCH team in providing a positive and supportive environment to students throughout their studies right through to the workplace.
Our widening participation scheme for older learners, the Open Access to Knowledge (OAK) programme, opens up study experiences for older people giving them the chance to undertake a learning experience that enhances their skills, confidence and love of learning."
